My focus on Literacy
I really want to focus on learning how to better research with the internet. I really firmly believe that the internet should be used for the bettering our minds and our understanding of the world, and I personally want to learn a lot more from it. I’m having some issues with it for the moment, meaning I can’t find everything that I need to be finding, which is quite frustrating.
I wish everything was way more narrowed down. Maybe not even that, just one web site strictly for research, and if there is one, PLEASE DISPLAY IT TO ME
! I get really frustrated really easily when I’m given a billion different things that are not really what I need to get where I’m going. Moreover, I get really frustrated when I can’t find the thing(s) I need at all. The internet is supposed to have basically everything displayed for you and to be easily accessible, but right now, it sucks for me. If there was a tutor for this sort of stuff, I would easily be in their office right now. So, the main point is, I want help with finding things.

When it comes down to asking what I think literacy is, I’m sort of old-fashioned. But literacy is a new concept within itself these days, and there are many new ways to describe literacy, as Mr. Rich has explained to us. We’re in a new world with many new environments, and to not be literate today is virtually impossible.
In Will Rich’s blog, he compares literacy with independence. I agree with this. Being literate is, in a sense, being independent. If you can read, and write things on your own, your literate, and therefore you don’t need any person to look over your shoulder for help.
We’re in a world today where dependency(for literacy) is rare. Children are learning things a lot faster, people are becoming smarter easier and all because of one thing. This thing is new technology. Technology is rapidly changing the world as it evolves through time.

Group Project
In a world full of limitless possibilities on the internet, life can be potentially dangerous. There are many, many ways in which a child can get caught up in the wrong places on the internet, and frankly I wouldn’t want that happening to my child. There are also many dangerous things for any age on the internet, such as addictive gaming, and chat rooms. There should be more restrictions to the internet, and the internet should be used mainly for educational purposes.
The hard facts and evidence can clearly be found throughout many internet resources as well as others. On MSNBC.com, there was a survey held that found that eighty percent of porn watchers were spending so much time doing so that they were eventually putting their relationships, and work lives at jeopardy. Another survey held said that until those people discovered cyber sex, most had no problems with sex addiction in the “real world”. I believe that porn sites should be more restricted and less open. They should make sure as much as possible that this person is of legal age and such and should most definitely NOT show any pictures until they are one hundred percent sure.
As for gaming, many various websites have held many surveys and done extensive research on the addiction to them. One website found that forty percent of the people who play World of Warcraft are in fact addicted to it(http://digg.com/gaming_news/40_Percent_of_Players_Are_Addicted_to_World_of_Warcraft). Another website(http://www.edge-online.com/news/study-one-in-12-gamers-addicted) stated that one in twelve of every “gamer” is addicted to it. I think their should be a warning of some sort, or a limitation on websites as to how many and to what duration you play video games. If a major website made it so you could only stay logged in for two hours per day, I think the rate of addiction would go down considerably.
Chat rooms pose the most risk out of the three of these examples put together. Chat room conversations can lead to sexual or violent topics, and they may promote hate against someone(http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/resources/special_initiatives/wa_resources/wa_teachers/are_you_web_aware/web_aware_chat.cfm). Many people (girls in particular) may receive sexual content frequently, but most importantly of all, relationships with people you don’t know on the internet can lead to cyber stalking, someone coaxing you into meeting them in real life, or maybe pornography being sent to you. Over half of eleven through twelve year old children that visit chat rooms go to restricted, or adult chat rooms .More than four in ten youth say they have met someone new on the Internet who asked for information, such as their photo, phone number, street address or school. Fifteen percent of youth that have been in chat rooms have actually followed through and met someone in person, either alone of with a friend, and twelve percent of those same people say that was a terrible experience. Chat rooms put your children and other loved ones in danger. There needs to be a higher restriction to the content put on there and there needs to be an administrator over all of the content.
People who do these three things have many arguments for why they are all good. At http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/248654/5_reasons_why_pornography_is_good_for.html they use the arguments that pornography is good for the economy, provides jobs for people, reduces the rate of rape, stalking and underage sex, creates controversy, and boosts your ego. Despite all of these things said, the reporter still said that it is sensible to restrict those that aren’t f age. By saying this, the reporter is aware of the dangers of pornography that are presented.
Those arguing for the use of online gaming say that it’s beneficial for our youth(http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2007/07/study-online-ga/). They say that it gives them the freedom to explore and socialize in a way they otherwise would not. They also stated that the entrepreneurial kids engage in business deal as well. But is every kid and entrepreneur, and this still poses the danger of chat room “creepers”. To prove our case, we also found that there was no supporting evidence for the “good” chat room.

I think the internet is used for a huge variety of things, and it all truly depends on the person. As, the YouTube video says…some people actually do use it for it porn(sadly). But many of us actually use it for knowledgable purposes. Many people use the internet solely for the use of reasearch on search engines. Also, many people use the internet for music, to keep up with news, to play games, and even to blog.
The internet provides us with this incredible range of endless possibilities, but in my opinion the sole use of all of these examples is entertainment. The internet should be used as a source of entertainment, and not just work. We are so blessed to be in an era where we don’t really have any limits technologically and we should take full advantage of it.
But, the internet can also be used for a very useful purpose that many of us students need to recognize, and that’s for our educational well-being. We can learn so many new things from the internet just by simply inserting a phrase into a search engine. Therefore, more so than just entertainment, the internet should be used mainly for our minds to grow and to learn a vast amount of new things.

How I Use New Media.
The ways I use new media today are endless. Whether it’s from jamming to music off of my MP3 player while I’m working out or just plain old sitting on the couch and watching high definition television. I constantly use new technology day-to-day. Despite this, I happen to use two things way more frequently than the others. These two things are my cell phone, and Facebook.
My cell phone is pretty much a source of security for me. As i said in the earlier post, being able to get in touch with someone at the drop of the hat is very important to me. It lets me know I am somewhat safe at times when I need it, such as at ten o’clock at night when i need to walk from a class to my car. Knowing that I can text someone or stay on the phone with someone so they know that I am safe is something that I treasure. My cell phone is my personal security guard.
As for Facebook, I have a load of family and friends way far away from me, and keeping in touch is a main priority for me. This is where Facebook comes in. My immediate family is the family I actually have in Turlock. Everyone else is either in the bay area or completely out of state. Knowing what’s going on with the rest of the family and how everyone is and just plain talking to them means the world to me. Also, my only two best friends are either out the country, or out of the city and way up-state. Facebook is my source of reassurance. I may not have them with me, but i can talk to them no matter what the circumstances are.
My cell phone and Facebook are literally my source of security. They have become my only sources of keeping in contact with the ones I love and the only source of my safety in times of need. Without either my world would quite literally turn upside down.

New Media :)
AH, thank God for new media. I’m sure the rest of the world my age agrees with me 100%.
New media has given us so many endless opportunities, and so many different things to do. We have the opportunity to get to talk to someone miles away in just seconds or milliseconds due to the wonderful upgrades in new media. Skype, AIM, Yahoo, texting, email…etc. It’s reassuring for many of us to have that security of being able to keep in touch with someone. The most important aspect of this for me is safety, emergencies, and things of that nature.
Media had also given us many different ways of keeping records of our lives, and the things that happen. Thus, the blog. With the blog we can keep records of everything everyday and have something to share with our grandkids, or laugh at. Without this new media life today would be drastically different, and drastically behind. There would still be the Pony Express, and “snail mail”(God forbid).
Once again, I say thank God for new media.
